Welcome to 2024

I wonder what’s in store for my cycling journey in 2024.

In 2023 I lost my way a bit. I didn’t feel any pressure to get out and ride so the number of kilometres cycled is way down compared to previous years. In 2024 I intend to rectify this. I reckon cycling helps to limit ones need to interact with the health system as does walking, providing benefits both mental and physical.

So, I’ve set a target for myself to help push me out the door. A minimum of 77-78 kilometres of cycling per week plus 15 k of trail walking. Why 77-78 kilometres? Well, that’s simple – it’s my age for this year.

Cycling the Greenspeed is not a huge challenge because of the power assist. I keep the power levels dialled down so cycling it helps with leg strength and gets the aerobics up nicely.  To make sure things keep working, the 77-78k per week will include some time on the non-ebike Brompton.

This will begin in January but starting on Jan 1 I have also to do a round of Efudix to clean up the various bits of sun damage on the scalp. This will be sore after week 3 so I may not be able to wear a helmet!

Time will tell how all this lot goes – but setting targets is a start.

Here are some pictures taken in 2023 :

On a ride to Powranna Road we came across this. What are they?
A paddock of Emus

We had seen a couple in this field before but now there were 12 or 13 adults plus 3 chicks. As we took pictures a farm vehicle pulled up and asked what we were doing. The driver turned out to be the farmer. He told us he likes Emus; these are pets and not kept for processing.

The Emus were just as interested in us !!

One of the odd things spotted in 2023. Cans keeping barbed wire strands apart or storage for warm Sarsaparilla ?
Plastic rubbish

I continued picking up plastic rubbish found by the roadside. On the trike I am travelling slower than other cyclists and can stop, lean down and pick up plastic bottles etc easily. The finds are then put in the recycling bin at home or general rubbish bins at recreational grounds we pass. One category of throwaway rubbish that has increased is the takeaway coffee cup. The lids are recyclable but the body is generally not. Some are compostable, most aren’t. So they need to go in the bin.

The main culprit

The State Gov promised us a bottle and can recycling scheme by 2022. No sign of it yet and when I wrote to the Minister I was assured meetings were occurring. So that’s OK then!

The 2024 goals are set. Now to execute the plan !

I wish you all a Happy New Year and I hope 2024 will be good to you.

’til next time ………………..

Born in 1946 I learnt to cycle about 10 years later. On a bike with rods connecting brake levers to the brakes - anyone remember those? I emigrated to Australia (from the UK) in 1974 and moved to Tasmania in 1984. Bicycles were in my life for most of that time although sometimes they were replaced by motorised two wheels for a bit more excitement. On reaching 70 I decided to stick to pedal power but in 2019 an electric recumbent made an appearance. it's now 2023 and I have 3 bikes. 2 e-recumbents and the Brompton.

  1. Happy New Year! The goals seem achievable but not too easy, so it sounds like you are in for a good year. Do you have good places to walk nearby, or can you easily walk to the shops to get in kays? I’ve been very much enjoying walking everywhere and getting back on the bike since moving back into town. I hope your scalp heals quickly with no further treatment required. Maybe you can do walks with an umbrella while waiting for the painful stage to resolve. All the best for a safe, happy and healthy 2024!

    1. I am aiming to get into some low key trail walking. I used to do a lot of bush walking until I damaged tendons in a knee and cycling was the only exercise for a while. After that I never got back into it but the recent walk up to Liffey Falls was encouraging as well as satisfying.
